Why the R1S changes the kit
Around 105 cu ft with both rear rows folded, a flat floor, a front trunk for the muddy gear, and Camp Mode that levels the air suspension and runs climate overnight. A full-size vehicle: no tent, two sleep on the folded seats, and nothing else has to pack small.
Built for exactly this: two adults sleep in back with the kit stowed up front.
Sleeping inside the vehicle
With the rear seats folded, the Rivian R1S is a flat platform.
- On the cargo floor: a 2.5-inch self-inflating pad, or a 4-inch air mattress.
- Camp in it often: a plywood-and-2x4 platform with drawers underneath - a real bed plus gear storage.
- Overnight climate is the easy part: turn on Camp Mode before you sleep and the car holds your set temperature and keeps air moving all night, which also handles condensation, so there is no need to crack windows or run a fan. Budget roughly 5 to 15 percent of the battery for a night depending on how hard the climate has to work, and arrive with that margin on top of what you need to drive out.
Two things this setup needs that the kit does not carry, because they are sized to the car: a 4-inch SUV air mattress for the cargo floor, and Rivian R1S window rain guards so the windows can stay cracked in the rain. Both on Amazon.
